A very Fuzzy gift guide
Greetings Fuzzy Needle friends,
Hope everyone is having a good week so far. The holidays are coming up, and we thought it’d be a good time to share this year’s gift guide with all of you. All of these records, books, and items are currently on sale at our Wilmington store. We encourage those of you in Durham to check our Durham store’s Instagram and take advantage of the extended holiday shopping hours.
Here are some of our offerings:
Folk Poet: For the friend who loves the natural world, acoustic tunes, and geese migration patterns. We’ve got a copy of the excellent new record by Dean Johnson, the first volume of a collection of poetry from Mary Oliver, and a strange bootleg cassette compilation of Lyle Lovett songs. (Note: We also have volume two of this poetry collection if you really want to wow them.)
Femme Rock: For the friend who sometimes revisits Jessica Hopper reviews. We’ve got a copy of Pod by the Breeders (who embraced the “women in rock music” headlines with a winking irony), a copy of The Slicks by Maggie Nelson (which pairs Taylor Swift with Sylvia Plath — whoa — also you can get it on our online), and this cool pin.
Sad Southerner: For the friend who’s just really got the blues. Try the Townes Van Zandt self-titled record, a copy of experimental newspaper County Highway, and this edition of Carson McCullers’ The Heart is a Lonely Hunter to hopefully lift their spirits. We also still have plenty of Townes Van Zandt tshirts for sale if they already have that record.
Reverb Riot: For the friend with the noise project and every guitar pedal you can think of. We’ve got the beautiful, brilliant Diamond Jubilee by Cindy Lee (which is no longer available on streaming), some cool zines by Leomi Sadler and Michael Begnal, and the Carrera Bestial compilation cassette.
Universal Sound: For the friend who puts spiritual jazz on during the office holiday party. Try Lanquidity by Sun Ra, the groundbreaking meditation on Black artistry by Tyehimba Jess, and this lighter with sweet verses on it.
Midnight Cowboy: For the friend who’s got work boots, date boots, and funeral boots. Here’s Rodeo in the Sky by Johnny Baker on wax, Slinger by Edward Dorn, and another funky lighter — this time with a cowboy on it.
Vibrant Vanguard: For the friend who’s always putting you on. We’ve got AOTY contender Baby by Dijon, the history of music as told by award-winning critic Kelefa Sanneh, and a beautiful handmade mug for the hot drink they’ll need to get through the latest Fantano video.
North Carolina Mentioned: For the friend who just loves the Old North State. First, the latest live album from Asheville’s own MJ Lenderman. Add this collection by Whiteville native and transcendental poet A.R. Ammons and a stylish sh*t sticker from Dollar Country and you’re golden.
Wednesday Freak: We all know one. Obviously we have the other contender for AOTY Bleeds at the shop. But if they’ve already snagged their copy (plus bought out Mr. Rat’s Flea Market), try this issue of Antics featuring their cover story (also available online). Plus, and this dovetails with the North Carolina gift ideas, this collection of North Carolina horror stories by John Harden just seems so Wednesday.
P.S…
We also have some very cool skateboards, skate equipment, and merch from Transportation Unit on sale at the shop and online. You can find more info here.
We also have select records and books for sale at our web store. Here’s the link to that.
You can see our collection of particularly rare books and items on eBay and our collection of particularly rare records on Discogs.
We’ll be having a holiday VHS screening at the Wilmington shop on Friday, Dec. 19th. We’ll post more details on our website and Instagram later today, so keep your eyes peeled.
We’ll be open on the morning of Christmas Eve and closed on Christmas Day.
Thanks for reading, and happy holidays.
